Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word meaning "Science of Life." Sanskrit is the language of the ayurvedic texts. In yoga class we hear the Sanskrit names for the asanas, or poses as well as the English translations. The most commonly used Sanskrit word is not really a word at all, but a mantra, "om" which represents the All, the universal. We will typically end our asana practice with the greeting "Namaste" which is Sanskrit for "I honor the divine in you." This greeting is used when you first meet someone, and again when you depart, palms together, with a bow of the head. Sanskrit is such a beautiful language, representing centuries of history with many layers of meaning.
